As part of a multidisciplinary team, we developed a greening strategy to monitor and effectively manage, increase/enhance urban and suburban greening in the Capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh.
The outcome of the project was a roadmap that successfully identified and protected areas of green infrastructure to help contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future for the capital city.
Four design principles drive the concept design for the Green Riyadh Vision: Sustainability, Integration, Connectivity and Functionality.
A botanical research aims tol enrich the palette of species. 9 biophysical and 12 functional criteria will ensure selected species are adaptable to Riyadh’s environment and are suitable for target areas.
Green Riyadh potential benefits includes temperature reduction (surface temperature ~2.1 °C and air temperature ~0.3 °C), humidity increase (~6.3%), energy savings (~127 Mn. SAR/year), CO2 storage (~188 k tons/year), annual dust reduction (~859 tons PM10/year), increased property value (~32 B SAR) and increase in stormwater interception (~72% increase).
